      <image:caption>When we were looking at rental agencies, I did not rely on the reviews linked directly from a listing. I checked multiple review sites, looked at local community groups, and compared what the company said about itself with what tenants were saying elsewhere. One source rarely gives you the whole picture, which is why cross-checking is such a useful information-literacy habit. If a claim matters to the decision you are making, look somewhere else too. A second source may confirm the first one, complicate it, or completely change your understanding. All of that information helps build a fuller picture.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/66d92d727e4e98057ed336d8/1791235871491-DKUOKJBPUHEGEIIHZXHC/Slide+4.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - What Moving Reminded Me About Information Literacy</image:title>
      <image:caption>Preschool research was a little different. Licensing mattered, of course, but licensing only told me that a school met a particular set of requirements. It did not tell me whether the curriculum was a good fit for our child, whether the daily schedule worked for our family, what the classroom environment felt like, or whether the school matched what we were actually looking for. We looked at what was being taught and made an in-person visit non-negotiable before making a decision. That same principle applies to a lot of information we encounter. A credential, certification, or official designation can tell you something important about a source, but it is still only one piece of the picture. The usefulness of that information depends on what you are actually trying to learn or decide.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/66d92d727e4e98057ed336d8/1791235871743-GIPU72MYHM95BZT854YG/Slide+5.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - What Moving Reminded Me About Information Literacy</image:title>
      <image:caption>Finding doctors and dentists introduced another problem: outdated information. Insurance directories are useful starting points, but they are not always current, and provider websites can be out of date too. At some point, the fastest and most reliable way to verify the information is simply to ask the source directly. My usual script is simple: “I’m calling to confirm that you take [insurance name]. You do? Great, I’d like to schedule an appointment.” Verification is one of those information skills that sounds obvious until you realize how often we skip it. A website says something, so we assume it is still true. A search result gives us an answer, so we move on. A directory lists a provider, so we trust the listing. Sometimes thirty seconds of checking can save a lot of frustration later.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - What Moving Reminded Me About Information Literacy</image:title>
      <image:caption>Veterinary clinics brought me back to one of my favorite questions when evaluating information: Does this look realistic? When I read reviews, I expect some disagreement. People have different expectations. Businesses make mistakes. Someone will be unhappy about something. That does not mean every negative review is meaningful, but a complete absence of criticism can make me more skeptical, not less. If a business has hundreds of reviews and every single one is glowing, I start asking questions. Are the reviews recent? Do they sound specific? Are they coming from real people? Do the same comments show up on other platforms? Does the overall picture hold up when I look somewhere else? The most useful picture usually comes from looking at several pieces of information together.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - The Literacies We Need to Navigate Life Online - Information literacy sometimes gets tucked into the world of school and research papers, but we use these skills constantly. Every time we look up a recipe substitution, check whether a store is still open, compare two products at Target, figure out why the dishwasher is making that weird noise, or look up something someone mentioned in conversation, we are working with information. The important part is what happens after we find it. Where did the information come from? How current is it? Who created it? Can it be verified somewhere else? Does the source actually support the claim being made? With practice, those questions become habits rather than (ugh) homework.</image:title>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - The Literacies We Need to Navigate Life Online - You do not have to personally use AI tools for AI literacy to matter. Other people, businesses, and content creators are using them, which means AI-generated text, images, audio, and video are increasingly part of the same online spaces we already navigate. AI literacy means understanding what these tools can do, where they can fail, and why polished information can still be inaccurate. It also means being willing to verify what you see rather than accepting something because it looks convincing. Many of the questions overlap with information literacy: Who created this? Where did the information come from? Can I verify it? What context is missing?</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/66d92d727e4e98057ed336d8/9671a730-611c-48da-99cd-f3ede7d9b725/4.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - The Literacies We Need to Navigate Life Online - Our definition of media has become enormous. Traditional news outlets now exist alongside independent journalists, podcasts, newsletters, YouTube channels, TikTok accounts, influencers, citizen journalists, and people who simply happen to be in the right place with a phone. That means we have to think critically about who is producing the information we consume and how it was created. Who qualifies as a journalist? What standards are they following? Is reporting being separated from commentary? Are original sources linked? What might be missing? For me, media literacy is closely tied to curiosity. Reading critically does not mean assuming everyone is lying to you. It means being willing to dig deeper, especially when something confirms what you already believe or immediately makes you angry.</image:title>

      <image:title>Overdue Thoughts - The Literacies We Need to Navigate Life Online - Being comfortable with technology can create the impression that we understand it. Meanwhile, we post photographs, check into places, announce vacations, share milestones, answer quizzes, and leave tiny pieces of information scattered across platforms. That is why I keep coming back to the idea that the danger is rarely one enormous overshare. It is often a hundred small pieces that someone else can put together to find your story. Digital literacy includes thinking about what information is visible, whether something needs to be shared in real time, and how far it might travel beyond the audience we assume is seeing it.</image:title>
